PROF. MÁIRE MESSENGER DAVIES
Professor of Media Studies and Director of the Centre for Media Research, the School of Media, Film and Journalism at the University of Ulster

Maire Messenger-DaviesProfessor Máire Messenger Davies is Professor of Media Studies and Director of the Centre for Media Research in the School of Media, Film and Journalism at the University of Ulster, Coleraine, with special responsibility for policy research.

A former journalist, with a PhD in psychology, she has taught in universities on both sides of the Atlantic. She is the author of a number of books on media audiences, especially young people, including Television is Good for Your Kids (1989,2002), London: Hilary Shipman; Fake, Fact and Fantasy: Children’s Interpretation of Television Reality (1997), Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum; and ‘Dear BBC’: Children, Television Storytelling and the Public Sphere (2001), Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

She is especially interested in research methods training, and her most recent book is Practical Research Methods for Media and Cultural Studies: Making people count, (Edinburgh University Press, 2006) with Nick Mosdell of Cardiff University.
